Registration: SPJA Shiftboard

Thank you for showing your interest in volunteering for Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention!

Anime Expo is hosted by The Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (“SPJA”), a non-profit organization dedicated towards promoting Japanese animation and pop culture. Please remember that all positions are volunteer and are not paid or compensated in any way.

If you have already applied and registered to be an Anime Expo volunteer through the Shiftboard database, do not re-apply. Reach out to vr@spja.org if you are having issues accessing your account.

Volunteer Requirements

    • Must be at least 18 years old by May 1st of the year you wish to volunteer. All volunteers must be 18 before beginning any volunteer work or training. (i.e. To volunteer for Anime Expo 2030, you must be at least 18 years old by May 1, 2030.)
    • Must have a minimum of 40-hour commitment scheduled (may include both pre-con and at-con hours).
    • Must be available for all of the Anime Expo show dates. Some departments may require earlier onsite arrival.
    • Complete Shiftboard Volunteer Application and Shiftboard Profile.
    • Complete Anime Expo Volunteer Checklist:
    • Complete Volunteer Onboarding Forms.
    • Complete a background check.
    • Complete Youth Protection Policy (YPP) courses.
    • Complete volunteer department-specific training and requirements.
    • Adhere to all SPJA Volunteer Policies and Guidelines.

Profile Photo Requirements

The photo you upload of yourself should be a headshot, such as a photo taken for a State ID or Passport. (Note: Do not upload a photo of your identification card to Shiftboard). As this photo is used as your volunteer badge credential, please be professional. Do not add any filters, include cosplay, and/or revealing attire, etc. (Your photo will be removed at SPJA’s discretion if it does not meet the criteria). The photo must be clear with no shadows and no obstructing objects, such as hats, dark sunglasses, eyeglasses with a glare, etc. Lastly, this photo should just be of only you! Your photo may be removed and you will be requested to upload a new photo.
